Exploring the Pacific Northwest Landscape

Desert Moonrise, US 97

Desert Moonrise, US 97

A ’scenic’ pull out in southern Washington’s central desert.

Winter is the best time of year to see the desert, and Thanksgiving is my traditional vacation holiday. Four days away from the job and only moderate weather, before most passes are rendered impassable, often makes this the last chance until April or May to get away to less popular / more untamed lands. I’ve driven across Southern Utah, camped in Big Basin, explored Rhode Island’s archipelago, and now revisited The Gorge over Thanksgiving. As long as you can avoid the traffic ( hint: take scenic back roads ) this can be a great time to travel.
