Sunshine on the Surrounding Peaks

Sunshine on the Surrounding Peaks

Paradise is a valley surrounded by peaks in the six to seven thousand foot range. Because Rainier itself shoots up another 9,000 feet above the valley floor, it’s often hidden behind PWN weather: clouds and rain or snow. Often these peaks are the only ones in sight.

  1. Dude - the sun looks like a star!

  2. Well … technically, the sun is a star.

But the points are from diffraction; I used a smallish aperture on this to choke back the abundant light and have enough depth of field to keep the foreground snow an dbackground mountains in focus. The light goes through such a small iris that it starts to bend, and strong point sources of light turn into star points like that. My primer on night photography article explains this.

  3. such a nice picture!
