Exploring the Pacific Northwest Landscape

Olympic Sunset from Golden Gardens

Posted February 25th, 2008 in [hide]

Sunset Over the Olympic Mountains

In the north end of Ballard, Golden Gardens is a small point into Puget Sound. Beach spreads out in both directions, giving visitors fantastic views into the Olympic Range, making a great hike, and attracting water foul of all kinds.

Across the water is Bainbridge Island, hosting a row of pines in the middle-ground below the mountains. Seattle is demarcated by water, but on a clear day we become a valley between the highlands to the east and the archipelago filling the Sound, our three national parks show themselves. There are many not so clear days, however.

Olympic Storm

On one of them, during a harsh storm this past winter, the road into Golden Gardens collapsed, swallowing a car. It feels like the entire Northwest has been subject to especially treacherous weather lately, but this has been the case since the city of Seattle has been known to written history. In November, 1852, Arthur Denny was greeted by his brother at Alki Point - birthplace of Seattle - with the words “I wish you hadn’t come.” The following spring, they resettled in Pioneer Square.

To this day, we see ourselves as the Gateway to Alaska ( lingering from the gold rush era ), with everything that entails.

  1. Amazing photographs… I have been trying to pick up photographing again. I just have to find inspiration in the same incredible way you do. Hopefully I will be able to use the tips you have provided on your site and not just enjoy your images.

  2. Dude, I really like #2 - that’s fantastic! Me - I’d be inside by the fire!

  3. I hope I get to see some nice photos of Sweden, Emil…?
