Exploring the Pacific Northwest Landscape

The Pacific Viking

The Pacific Viking

Docked in Ballard, and apparently undergoing repairs, The Pacific Viking is a Seattle fishing ship.

I picked up a copy of Workers, by Sebastião Salgado, full of dark and brooding photos of “the landless” toiling on for the rich, industrialized world. Salgado’s photos instantly have the look of Ansel Adams. They should, as black and white zone-system prints. This particular book has countless photos of ship hulls, mostly looking up from below, and often grounded.

In mine, the water hides 15 to 20 yards of boat beneath the murky surface … the effect isn’t quite the same. Still, like with my homage to MC Escher, Salgado’s work left a strong visual impression.

One Response to “The Pacific Viking”

  1. How far from land is this? The larger boat, is she in motion?
