Peering into the Abyss

Peering into the Abyss

Looking down from the top of Multnomah Falls. All told, the waterfall is 620 feet; to the left can be seen the trees that grow, basking in life-giving water. The scene is lush, reminiscent of any other temperate rain-forest … but less than 100 miles to the east is a barren desert.

  1. You weren’t a little worried leaning over to take a picture like that? And then with a story about suicide?

  2. Haha…. I was thinking the same thing as John, judging from the camera angle.

  3. There’s a metal rail holding would-be jumpers back. It’s not terribly secure; they have nets hanging under the Golden Gate. A person could climb the fence fi they really wanted to … or take a different trail, through the water.

In the bottom-right corner, you can see a light; this is the lodge at the bottom. 620 feet isn’t terribly much, but it’s one of the taller drop falls around here … and pretty amazing to look down.
