Michael the Cat Rescue Fund
Posted January 17th, 2008 in [hide]As you’ve probably noticed, many of the photos on this blog are from my home city, Seattle. Most, if not all, have grown out of local hikes. I live toward the bottom of Queen Anne hill, and make frequent hikes to Kerry Park. Late last week I found a lost cat on one of these hikes; I coaxed it away from the road, and it began to follow me.
With little choice, I took the cat in for the night, then to a veterinarian the next day to find its owner, putting up local classified ads and posters. The cat has a microchip - and, according to it, his name is Michael; he’s 14 years old - but, sadly, the vet found his owner, who dumped him.
Naturally this meant a return trip for Michael to the vet. Between his eye, low weight, and insatiable thirst, a lot of testing was in order. Michael is in good shape overall, but has weak kidneys ( and needs special food because of it ). The medical attention was quite expensive - roughly $500 - but necessary given the situation. Regrettably, I need to ask any of my readers who feel so inclined to make a small donation toward repaying the vet for Michael’s care.

I hope everything goes well with your new found friend. I also hope that others find it within themselves to help you with the bill, even as you helped Michael.
He’s a beautiful cat and with the right care, and the right food, there’s no reason this cat can’t live to a ripe old age. Curse the owner for dumping Micheal. If I weren’t so far away, I’d give him a home !
You should get my donation soon.

What a beautiful guy Michael is. Good luck with him, and I do hope you get plenty of donations.
Donation sent Forrest and I’m trying to send you a little traffic this way too. I’ll write a post over the weekend and see if I can convince a few people I know to help as well.
No living creature should be abandoned.
How’s Micheal doing now?
For the most part he’s doing pretty well. His vision seems pretty mixed … I don’t really understand it. He gets lost very easily, and it seems to scare him. I’ve had to rescue the guy from the closet, or from having wedged himself between the wall and my bed. On the other hand, he found a chair he can sit on right next to the heater, and adores it. Plus I’ve got a space set up for him to stare out at the bird feeder, and he seems to enjoy it.
What really gets me is he adores humans. He’ll almost chirp when somebody walks by … his cute little way of asking for attention. He’s clearly been loved and well cared for most of his 14 years … I don’t know how that changed suddenly.
Although he likes to pee on the floor. I don’t know if he gets lost and can’t find his cat box, or what … I need to do some homework on how to clean out the smell.
here’s to Michael. Courtesy of Diane’s post at CIC.

Sorry, I had meant to make a donation to the fund a while ago…hope your still accepting funds.
Been there so many times, we had a one eyed three legged cat and she lived to 18 years old!
The smell from the peeing, I worked that one out. It is an ammonia type smell and very hard to shift right? Tropical fish keepers use something called AmmoLock to safely turn ammonia based waste in fish tanks into something totally harmless. I got a little bottle from a fish store, diluted it and sprayed effected parts of pure wool carpets that I couldn’t even clean with water. Instantly neutralises the smell and the by products are completley harmless. Only costs a few buck too.
Hope that helps. I am sure you will not regret your action and will be very happy for many years.
Forrest, can I post pictures anywhere? My sister just e-mailed me with some examples of spray painting your cat! I joke not. Let me explain. My sister is a cat lover through and through, she is also a Fellow of the Royal Photographic Society and world class underwater photographer……..I think these are genuine pictures of peoples cats NOT Photoshop, she would know the difference! If you want to share them I will keep the e-mail to ones side just in case.
