Homage to MC Escher

Posted September 11th, 2007 in [hide]

Reflections from Avery PointWhen I was a kid, maybe ten years old, I saw an MC Escher sketch of trees and sky reflecting in puddles on a muddy dirt road, with bike tracks. It was a powerful image, and it’s stuck with me through the years.

This was the first photo I shot that I thought was any good, back in 1997.

Avery Point

In Groton, Connecticut, this is part of the campus of UConn, or the University of Connecticut, Avery Point. Nearby is an old lighthouse, but with the ground covered in six inches of slush, it was a less attractive subject than nearby shore … and this reflection caught my gaze along the way.

The name comes from the fact that Avery Point is a peninsula, jutting out into the mouth of the Connecticut River, where it joins Long Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean. Not surprisingly, the university has a renowned marine sciences program. In high school we used to take field trips down the river into what seemed like open ocean. This isn’t far from where I learned to scuba dive.

  1. What freakin context! Love the map with the satelite photo view - seems appropriate somehow, huh? And to see exactly where you’re talking about and how it fits into the east coast like that. I’m from Chicago so this whole “Long Island Sound” think is academic to me.

Great photo, too - it’s wickedly cool.

  2. What kind of unpatriotic libtard are you? Only some kind of islamo-fascist wannabe or commie from Massachusetts would post freaking pictures on SEPTEMBER 11TH.

  3. You Republicans are always so gleeful on the aniversary of 9/11. You all have an unhealthy fetish for evil.

  4. Wow … this really isn’t the response I was expecting! With everyone else in the world dredging up painful memories of 9/11, do we really need one more? I’d rather focus on something positive.

And not that it matters, but for the record, I posted this on September 10; my server’s local time seems to be pretty out of whack with my local time here in Seattle. I’m guessing you probably wrote on the 11th, not the 12th?

And by the way, it’s Connecticut, not Massachusetts. You can tell from the line that says “In Groton, Connecticut, …

  5. Hoo boy. You have an idiot and a troll reading your blog. Not gonna throw gasoline on the fire, but I might have to write about your GFC idiot.

  6. you have some nice photos

  7. Thanks, Andrew! I’m glad you’re enjoying them…
