The Summit - Granite Mountain Lookout
Posted December 27th, 2009 in [hide]Photographed from an altitude of 5,207 feet, at the summit of Granite Mountain there is a lookout tower, built for forest rangers to spot wild fires. The tower itself doesn’t stand out well in the satellite map below.
While there are few flat areas at the summit, camping is possible, though it’s clearly not for the faint of heart. In summer there’s no shade, and I would expect the streams and ponds to have dried up by late June. In the winter, harsh winds, snow, and cold from the sheer altitude will conspire to make for a very cold night. The growing season is short, and the peak is well above timberline, so there is no wood to burn, and precious little land to pitch, let alone try to build a fire pit. Still, if you can carry enough water with the rest of your camping gear, this should make a good camp ground. I’ll probably return in the spring to camp here myself.
