Storm Clouds, Vanishing Sun
Posted December 27th, 2009 in [hide]Because of Seattle’s northern latitude ( 47.415 N is where this photo was created ), our days are long in the summer and short in the winter. On November 1 when I hiked the mountain and shot these photos, sunset came at 5:53 pm. This image was captured at (???) PM, after the sun had already begun to fall behind some of the taller peaks to the southwest.
As in the panorama, shot moments apart from this, we see storm clouds blowing over the divide. These clouds are the source of all condensation in the Pacific Northwest, allowing the region to team with life.
This hike took place on what felt like The Last Sunny Day, heading into a cold, bleak Seattle winter. True to form, even with the sun out and large patches of blue in the sky, heavy clouds were ruminating, moving in from the sea, and threatening a storm.
A similar, but perhaps less dramatic view of the far ridge can be seen in other photos from this hike.
