Exploring the Pacific Northwest Landscape

Reflecting Pond, Granite Mountain

Posted December 27th, 2009 in [hide]

Reflecting Pond, Granite Mountain

A small pond reflecting a small, lonely patch of fir trees left isolated at 4,856 feet above sea level. This is normally well above timberline in the Pacific Northwest, although a shelf in the leeward face of the mountain protects this area from the harsh winds, creating an oasis in the otherwise frigid alpine zone. This flourish of life can be seen as an unusually green spot on the map below, when zoomed in at the right level.

The reflecting pond can also be seen in this photo, surrounded by snow.

I’ve always been fond of reflection photos, and jump at the chance to shoot one. Here, I couldn’t resist making an exposure, and while the technical quality could be better - especially near the snow - I’m happy with the result.
