Freeway Park, Downtown Seattle
Posted August 26th, 2007 in [hide]A labyrinthine collection of pathways around I-5 through Seattle’s bustling downtown or financial district, is many things to many people. Generally, it’s looked down on, although not exactly in the way this image shows.
Although the park has a reputation suggesting you should visit if you’d like to be robbed, it’s an interesting place.
Business people take lunch here; trees provide shade. Setting up for this photograph, I could feel the rush of the waterfall blowing mist into my face, cooling the air. In one direction are skyscrapers looming overhead, and in the other is First Hill, a mostly residential neighborhood.
Several amenities, from flower gardens and waterfalls to the local blend of architecture, make Freeway Park a good place to spend an hour with your camera. Just don’t be surprised to see homeless people, occasionally asking for money or cigarettes.

The bee is freaking awesome! I love it!
The first one reminds me of something out of Tomb Raider.
Tomb Ranider, huh? You smoking crack?
I see this blog is a fan of Google Maps. Nice. I’m looking forward to some more suggestions where I should check out. I’m over in Issy, so you should make some more posts about stuff to check out in the city. And keep on with the directions and maps, huh?
Oh, and congrats on the bee pic - that one looks hard as hell to capture!
Never really liked that one, but there aren’t too many nice parks downtown. You should do a series on Mertyl Edwards - that’s a nice spot with a view of the sky scrapers and some grassy knolls that let you feel like you’re in nature. I’ve seen eagles fishing there. It’s a cool park, maybe the best one downtown, you should check it out.
Mertyl Edwards is where Hempfest is.
I love the comments you made about this park that is very near and dear to my heart (hint, hint - about “40 hours a week” dear-to-my-heart). It’s a lot of work taking care of this park and I wish people would come and stay for more than an hour! Things have really improved around here lately with the improvements to the park. My goodness! Check out Pigott Corridor, the fountain there is fantasic! Flower beds are marvelous (I just love the pictures of the Coleus ‘Rustic Orange and Begonia ‘Solenia Orange’ and ‘Solenia Apricot’) and I enjoyed planting them for you! The picture of the Main Fountain is pretty awesome, too. It kinda does look like something off of Tomb Raider!
Did you read The Strangers article on the Freeway Park squirrels? Quite comical!
