It’s been too long since I’ve made significant progress filling this map in. Washington, with all its diversity of landscape from abject desert to temperate rainforest, thousands of miles of uncharted dirt roads and more, still manages to make a small impact on the larger map.

I’ve driven cross-country six times; half of them alone. Having been born in Denver and growing up on the northern East Coast, yet spent much of my life along the Left Coast, I find driving a more intimate way to see our shared homeland than flying. Driving can present a glorious distraction, and it’s fascinating to see the artifacts of this drawn across the map: crosses where one’s own personal travels cross paths over distant time.
